A fine, 19th century, giant-size English carriage clock complete with its original travelling box and key by Barraud & Lund, Cornhill, London. The restrained brass case has a gilt finish with shuttered rear door. The enamel dial, with Roman numerals and Breguet type hands, is set in a finely chased gilt mask. The two train fusee movement has maintaining power and high quality compensated platform lever escapement. The hours are sounded on a bell and can be repeated at will. Both dial and movement are signed by the maker. Remarkably the clockâs original mahogany travelling box has survived, with slide-up front and recessed brass carrying handle. Barraud and Lund are recognised as one of the most important makers of precision clocks of the nineteenth century. This particular example would date from c1850. |
