A very fine William III longcase clock. Standing on a double plinth, the case is constructed primarily of oak veneered with walnut with unusual panels of walnut to the trunk and base. The hood is flanked by turned columns and includes the original caddy top with three brass finials. The 11ins square brass dial is mounted with cherub and foliage spandrels, a silvered chapter ring and subsidiary seconds ring. The centre is matted, there are ringed winding holes and engraving around the aperture to view the day of the month. The dial plate is signed below six o'clock by the maker. The high quality, five pillar movement has an anchor escapement and hour strike via an inside locking plate. |
