Description:    Eastern bronze model of an elephant, mounted as a tooth pick holder in 1844 with silver coloured metal inscribed "To Capt. B.J.Elder from his affectionate little friends Eliza Gordon Brodie Russell and Lena H. Brodie Russell 1844." The armorial to the reverse with the Elder family motto "Virtute Duce", may virtue be my guide.
Eliza Gordon Brodie Russell and Lena H. Brodie Russell were the grand daughters of The Rt Hon Sir Henry Russell Kt, 1st Baronet of Swallowfield, Berkshire 1751-1836. He was Chief Justice of Bengal 1807-1813. He married Anne Barbara Whitworth, sister of Charles Earl Whitworth 1764-1814.
They had a large family, and their 5th child, Francis Whitworth Russell 1790-1852 (known as Frank) married Jane Anne Catherine Brodie on 10th June 1823. She was the daughter of James Brodie of Brodie. Frank and Jane had at least 4 children including Eliza Gordon Brodie Russell 1831-1887 (who married Sir James Naesmyth of Posso, 5th Baronet 1827-1896) and Caroline H Brodie Russell 1834-? known as Lena who married Charles Goldsmid on 3rd May 1854. Both girls lived out their lives firstly in India, where Frank was a commissioner for investigating the debts of the Nabob of Arcot, and then in Scotland.
