Born at Berwick upon Tweed, he became a self taught artist, painting in his spare time and contributing illustrations to a local newspaper. His work as a landscape painter in watercolour became so well known that on his retirement from the Tyneside shipyard as a timekeeper, he became a successful professional artist. He was an admirer of fellow townsman Frank Wood (1862 – 1953).
