MUSICAL CUCKOO CLOCK ( 1880 )

Description:   Imposing, very rare Black Forest cuckoo clock in a superb inlaid walnut veneered case. The pediment, which is decorated with boxwood scrolls houses the cuckoo behind two doors. The body of the clock in a column with canted sides and scrolled brackets surmounted by a similar curved and ebonised hood. The brass bezel contains an enamelled cartouche dial with blue Roman numerals. The bone hands are beautifully carved and pierced.

Beneath the dial are two boxwood and ebony inlaid spandrels. Of utmost importance and rarity is the automatic calendar which is situated below the dial. The day, date and month appear behind bevelled brass frames.

The base of the clock having an attractive floral inlay to the front and concave corners. The clock is decorated with scrolls and edgelines throughout. Ebonised mouldings complete its imposing appearance.

The twin fusee gut line clock movement has wooden plates. It strikes the hours and half hours on a gong. The doors open, the cuckoo emerges and sounds `cuckoo' for each hour. After the strike a trip starts the musical movement mechanism and proceeds to play one of the six tunes on the 11 inch (28cm) cylinder.

The calendar mechanism is connected to the clock movement changing the dates at the appropriate times.

Both side doors have a retailer's label attached to the inside. They read, `E.Schwan 6 Promanade Baden-Baden'.

The right-side door blue label

On the right side a brass lever, attached to the movement advances the day and date when it is pressed.
The mechanism for the music is operated when the rod is raised.
A knob on the base stops the music when it is pushed home. This stops the movement from operating.
