The rosewood case of this superb early ratchet key wind musical box is finely decorated with elaborate designs of brass and filled with blue and white enamels and inlaid with red tortoiseshell. A beautifully designed motif adorns the centre of the lid and the four corner designs are linked to form a frame which is bordered with brass stringing. The front has a similar central layout. The movement plays six overtures and produces an excellent sound. The ‘fat’ cylinder is 19 ½ inches long and 3 ¾ inches wide (50cm X 9.75cm). It has the unusual feature of the gamme number stamped on the top surface of the cylinder. The comb has approximately 170 teeth and is stamped Nicole Freres once on the bass end and again on the treble top section. The brass bedplate is stamped ’Nicole Freres A Geneve, The hand engraved brass tune sheet lists the six overture programme and the serial number.
