Herbert H St John Jones was born in Shrewsbury in 1872. At the age of four or five he moved to Nantwich in Cheshire, where he lived until his death in 1939. He worked primarily during the first quarter of the 20th century, painting in both watercolour and oils, and gained a reputation throughout the United Kingdom for his animal paintings.
