THE YOUNG FLOWER SELLER JOHN ANSTER FITZGERALD 1832 – 1906 Signed Oil on canvas 30 ¼ x 25 inches John Anster Fitzgerald was a painter of fairy scenes and dreams, which included sleeping people surrounded by goblins – all highly imaginative works. He painted in oil and watercolour. Very little is known about his life and only very few paintings exist. He is known to have belonged to the Maddox Street Sketching Club and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1845 to 1902, the last title being ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in 1902. Fitzgerald also exhibited 8 paintings at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham, 11 at Dudley Gallery & New Dudley Gallery, 24 at the Walker Gallery Liverpool, 18 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 6 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 20 at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and 10 at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
