A Mahogany Regency Longcase Clock ( 1818 )

Description:   The well proportioned case stands at 82 inches (2.08 meters) with a pediment top. The hood has glazed side apertures and canted front corners. The trunk, similarly flanked by canted corners, has a long mahogany door with shallow break arch and a good flame veneer. The base has an inverted corner rectangular molding and stands on a plain plinth with block feet. The 12 inch silvered brass square dial is signed "Whitehurst and Son. Derby.", and has Roman hour chapters and a subsidiary seconds dial. The matching hands are of blued steel spad design. Movement: The well finished movement has shouldered plates with rounded edges and baluster pillars. The striking is by rack and the back cock is of typical Whitehurst design. The wood rod pendulum has a massive brass faced lenticular bob with a calibrated regulation nut. The matching pair of cast iron weights are original and stamped indistinctly. (possibly 18 or IW ). John Whitehurst II and his son John Whitehurst III were in partnership from 1809 to 1834. The uncle, John Whitehurst F.R.S. was an eminent scientist, clockmaker and philosopher.
